چکیده

Energy transport in nanostructures differs significantly from macrostructures because of classical and quantum size effects on energy carriers. Experimental results show that the thermal conductivity values of nanostructures such as superlattices are significantly lower than that of their bulk constituent materials. The reduction in thermal conductivity led to a large increase in the thermoelectric figure of merit in several superlattice systems. Materials with a large thermoelectric figure of merit can be used to develop efficient solid-state devices that convert waste heat into electricity. Superlattices grown by thinfilm deposition techniques, however, are not suitable for large scale applications. Nanocomposites represent one approach that can lead to high thermoelectric figure merit. This paper reviews the current understanding of thermal conductivity reduction mechanisms in superlattices and presents theoretical studies on the rmoelectric properties in semiconducting nanocomposites, aiming at developing high efficiency thermoelectric energy conversion materials.

Modeling the Thermoelectric Properties of Bulk and Nanocomposite Thermoelectric Materials

Thermoelectric materials are materials which are capable of converting heat directly into electricity. They have long been used in specialized fields where high reliability is needed, such as space power generation. Recently, certain nanostructured materials have been fabricated with high thermoelectric properties than those of commercial bulk materials, leading to a renewed interest in thermoe...

Modulation doping and energy filtering as effective ways to improve the thermoelectric power factor

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have undergone revolutionary progress over the last 20 years. The thermoelectric figure of merit ZT, which quantifies the ability of a material to convert heat into electricity has more than doubled compared to traditional values of ZT ∼ 1, reaching values even beyond ZT ∼ 2 in some instances. These improvements are mostly attributed to drastic reductions of the th...

Cross-plane Seebeck coefficient and Lorenz number in superlattices

Low dimensional and nanostructured materials have shown great potential to achieve much higher thermoelectric figure of merits than their bulk counterparts. Here, we study the thermoelectric properties of superlattices in the cross-plane direction using the Boltzmann transport equation and taking into account multiple minibands. Poisson equation is solved self-consistently to include the effect...

Wet chemical synthesis and thermoelectric properties of V-VI one- and two-dimensional nanostructures.

Recent advances in both theoretical and experimental studies on optimizing thermoelectric performance have proved to greatly benefit from nanostructure engineering. As a class of materials with the best thermoelectric properties near room temperature, V-VI alloy nanostructures, especially Bi(2)Te(3) and its alloy with Sb, Se and so on, have attracted a broad interest. This perspective gives an ...
